The Background Check

     The Cosca Group services include thorough reference checks that do not rely solely on those provided by applicants, but also reach out to employee organizations, PTAs and TCG network resources and contacts.

     You may also opt to include one or more comprehensive background checks to augment the California Live Scan; however, while we are committed to meeting your needs, we are also committed to protecting your liability and complying with the law.

The California Live Scan

California Live Scan is the state run system administered by the California Department of Justice to conduct criminal background checks for public school employment. Unfortunately, the State of California has mandated that only records related to the following categories are revealed by Live Scan:

  • Crimes relating to child abuse or elder abuse;
  • Sex Offenders; and
  • Convictions or incarcerations in the last 10 years as a result of committing: theft, robbery, burglary or any felony.

Since there may be many crimes that are not included, such as fraud, assault, and domestic violence, and since the Live Scan system places strict limitations on what information is available and how that information is distributed, you may choose to augment the Live Scan process with a comprehensive background check.

The Comprehensive Background Check

With your approval, the Cosca Group will work with you and your legal counsel to incorporate one or more comprehensive background checks into your search process that complies with local and state law and the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which governs background checks when information is obtained from a third-party consumer reporting agency.

Each background check will be conducted by a trained and experienced investigator to include, but not be limited to:

  • Civil Court Records;
  • County, State and National Criminal Records;
  • Credit Report;
  • Department of Motor Vehicle Records;
  • Education;
  • Employment Records;
  • Identified Aliases;
  • Local, State and National Sex Offender Records; and
  • News and Social Media.

This service will involve the most thorough and comprehensive research possible within reasonable time and cost constraints.
